The festival runs for an entire week, culminating on the final Sunday with the main race. The Palio itself is divided into three demanding stages that test strength, endurance, and teamwork.

How the Palio Race Unfolds

Stage 1 — The Lake Row

Crews from the four districts compete in an initial rowing race across the waters of Lake Trasimeno. Strength, rhythm, and strategy on the open water determine the early standings.

Stage 2 — The Boat Carry

Upon reaching the docks, participants hoist the heavy wooden boats onto their shoulders and sprint through the narrow alleys, steep staircases, and climbs of the historic town center. This is the most dramatic and emotional phase of the entire competition.

Stage 3 — The Final Water Dash

Teams return to the jetty, launch the boats back into the lake, and race to the finish line on the water. The district that crosses first wins the Palio — and earns the pride of the entire town.

The "Race of the Jugs" — a beloved secondary competition honouring the women who protected the castle's water supply during the historic sieges. Held on the Friday evening before the main Palio.

On the Saturday before the main event, the youngest generation takes centre stage with their own spirited competition — a joyful celebration of the next chapter of this living tradition.

Grand Fireworks Display

The festival opens with a spectacular fireworks show on Monday night and closes on the final Sunday at midnight with a grand pyrotechnic finale over the Lake Trasimeno.
